The Difference Between Managing a Business and Building One
Management keeps the machine running. Building changes what the machine is capable of. Great operators do both.
Management and building are often treated as the same job. They are not. Management is the discipline of running the business you already have — protecting margins, hitting targets, keeping commitments. Building is the discipline of creating capability that did not exist before.
A company that only manages will optimize itself into a corner. A company that only builds will burn resources chasing ideas it cannot execute. The rare leaders create enterprise value because they know which mode the moment demands.
In practice, this means holding two time horizons at once: the quarter and the decade. It means being ruthless about today’s numbers while investing patiently in the systems, people, and partnerships that determine tomorrow’s ceiling.
